Meet Our Pack!

Jaxon

Jaxon is a lover of all people. He’s incredibly smart and a bit complex. He’s laid-back yet willful; eager to please yet naughty; wants to be part of the action yet lazy. According to the Embark DNA test, this beautiful mutt’s top 4 breeds are: 25% pitbull, 20% lab, 12% collie, and 10% german shepherd. He’s also 100% sugar.

Josie

Josie is a high-energy Australian Cattle Dog (aka “Red Heeler”). She’s friendly, smart, and is very devoted to her person. Her favorite hobbies are chasing her ball, catching her ball and throwing her ball (yes, she throws)! She also loves to swim, and when necessary, defends her home from squirrels and vacuum cleaners.

Our elderly chihuahua, Rico Suave, passed away a couple of months after we moved into a new home and out of a condo (which was a failed 4 year experiment to see if condo life was right for us). I told my husband that I wanted to wait a while before getting a new dog so that we could enjoy the freedom to travel unconstrained. Well, that thought lasted about a day. I quickly found myself depressed – our oversized house was too quiet with just my husband and I. And since I work from home at my own pace, the routine that a dog provides was sorely lacking. So I soon found myself spending hours on Petfinder.com.

Jaxon's Adoption - Aug 22nd, 2019

My hubby and I are both attracted to border collies so I was focused mainly on border collie mixes. I quickly discovered that local Florida shelters don’t have a wide variety of dogs – the vast majority are medium to large dogs that clearly look to have some pitbull in them. I have nothing against pitbulls (other than trying to get homeowners insurance) but that wasn’t what we wanted. I also discovered that Florida shelters were fairly empty which is a great thing if you are a dog but not if you are looking for a dog. Florida is primarily a no-kill state and has a lot of dog fostering programs. There are even quite a few Florida rescues that bring dogs in from other states where they would have been euthanized.

But in the end, after missing out on the first dog we tried to adopt, we found a wonderful supposed border collie mix from Wags Rescue in Jesup, Georgia. I can’t say enough good things about this rescue! The founder/head of the organization along with her other foster parents, get to know their dogs and can match you with a pup that is a good fit for you. So their Connor became our Jaxon.

Jaxon was a lover from the moment we met him – he loves all people and wants to show it! He was a bit wild when we first got him home (ran around and peed on all the indoor artificial plants) but after that he was fine as long as you were paying attention to him. After some dog obedience classes, we decided that Jaxon (as well as us) would be happier if there was another dog to play with. So back to Wags Rescue we went.

We waited until there were 2 dogs that we were potentially interested in. This time it was between another supposed border collie mix and an australian cattle dog (red heeler). As soon as we met Josie (the red heeler then named Sashi) there was no doubt she was the one – she was so friendly, and happy and even the perfect 30 pound size we were hoping for. And she seemed very interested in playing with Jaxon which is what we were primarily looking for! She slept most of the four hour ride home but the last 30 minutes she woke up and proceeded to wrestle with Jaxon in the back seat on top of me. And so our adventures began…
